Progressive Action Endorses Duluth City Council Candidates

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – August 8, 2009
Progressive Action has released its endorsements in this year’s Duluth City Council races.
In the Second District, Progressive Action has endorsed Patrick Boyle, for the seat being vacated by the retiring Councilor Greg Gilbert.

Progressive Action has endorsed Kerry Gauthier in the Fourth District. Gauthier is one of five candidates in that race for the seat currently held by Councilor Garry Krause, who is not running for reelection.

And for At-Large, Progressive Action has endorsed Beth Olson and Dan Hartman. Five candidates are vying for two open At-Large positions, and after the Primary on September 15 the remaining four At-Large candidates will face off in the General Election on November 3.

In the screening, Progressive Action asked candidates about a wide variety of issues, including how they view the Council’s role in the school district’s Red Plan controversy, the future of the Lakewalk extension, and how they think Councilors can help grow jobs in Duluth. Progressive Action members reviewed the candidates’ written responses and voted on the endorsements.

“One issue we asked candidates about is their position on protecting Duluth’s most valued assets during these challenging financial times,” Progressive Action President Barb Olsen commented, "such as the Park Point recreation land the city sold. Many candidates said that although we must protect core services like fire and police, we must also work to protect those assets we can never get back again once we let them go.”

“It was a pleasure to endorse these four fine candidates,” Olsen added. “They’re people with strong progressive beliefs who would all be great additions to the Duluth City Council.”

Progressive Action will host a forum for all City Council candidates on September 9, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. in the Duluth City Council Chambers in City Hall. The forum is free and open to the public. More info here

Progressive Action is a group of volunteers in Northeastern Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin formed after the death of Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone to continue his work on issues such as affordable housing, living wages, and supporting progressives running for local office.
